Y-SMART regularly provides certificated training courses across the county for professionals and other adults who are currently working with young people.

This is split into a two-day Foundation Course entitled ‘Substance Misuse and Young People’, a one-day Enhanced Course entitled ‘Young People, Alcohol and Risk’ and a one-day Enhanced Course entitled ‘Cannabis and Young People’.

Course attendees are required to have completed both days of the Foundation course before undertaking either, or both, of the Enhanced courses.

The learning outcomes for the two-day Foundation course are as follows:

  • To understand the context of substance misuse and young people
  • To explore reasons why some young people are more at risk of substance misuse
  • To identify protective/vulnerability factors for YP’s substance misuse
  • To explore drugs, their effects and legal classifications
  • To raise awareness of the impact of parental substance misuse on young people
  • To explore the cycle of change and basic strategies to support/encourage change
  • To look at the ‘Tier’ system/confidentiality and competency to consent to treatment
  • Information about local/national services to support Young People around substance misuse
  • Using a screening tool to identify substance misuse
  • Using case studies to consolidate learning.

The Enhanced courses build on the above learning outcomes and go into more depth about the misuse of alcohol and cannabis together with the associated implications.

There is normally a charge for these courses and all our training is now ratified by the Devon Safeguarding Children Board (DSCB).
